TORONTO -- At this point in his career, Andrew Miller's starts fall into one category or the other: Pretty good or pretty bad.

Last month, Miller put together two strong outings in a row, limiting both the Royals and Rangers to a run apiece. But his start last weekend against Texas at Fenway resulted in him being chased in the second inning, and Thursday night it was only a little better.

Miller was charged with five runs in five innings on eight hits, taking the loss in the Red Sox' 7-4 setback to the Blue Jays.

"Basically, one inning came back and bit me," said Miller of the second, when the Jays scored four times.

The big blow in that inning was a three-run homer by Toronto rookie catcher J.P. Arencibia.

"Three-and-two, a changeup down in the zone," recounted Miller. "It just cut back down and in, right into his swing. Obviously, I'd like that one back. It's tough to go out and put us behind like that. That's not what you want to do.

"That falls on me."

Miller said he felt improvement over his previous outing, and indeed, there were bright spots, like retiring 8 of the last 10 hitters he faced.

But by then, the damage was done.

"There's flashes," said Terry Francona of Miller's progression, "but there's still runs put up on the board."

Over his last two starts, Miller has allowed 11 runs in 6 13 innings. For the season, as a starter, Miller is 6-3, 5.58 ERA.
