Jenks: Mechanical flaws caused arm problem

BOSTONRed Sox reliever Bobby Jenks said Friday he's been dealing with the effects of a right biceps strain -- which he thinks was caused by the mechanical flaws he spotted on video earlier in the homestand -- for "about a week-and-a-half now" and was placed on the disabled list because "it just wasn't going away."

In his last two outings -- April 29 and May 1 against the Mariners -- Jenks gave up three runs on four hits and four walks over 1 13 innings. He said he found a mechanical flaw that was causing his on-field problems, but the biceps strain became too much to deal with while he warming up during the 13-inning game against the Angels on Wednesday.

During the extra-inning game, I tried to get warm and my arm just started cramping up on me," Jenks said Friday. "I told manager Terry Francona, the coaches and the medical staff immediately and they called me in to see what was wrong. Got an MRI Thursday. I got a lot of tendonitis and a strained bicep right now.

The best way to describe it is, when I was standing here doing nothing . . . my arm felt like I . . . just did 12 sets of curls. Just very fatigued, constant achiness.

Jenks is unable to trace the problem to one particular game or event, but believes it's a result of his mechanical issues.

Im sure, he said. What I think it came from was pitching with those bad mechanics for so long that youre putting your arm into a different arm slot every time. Youre putting stress on it and its just not going to be right. I think that was the cause of it.

He said the problem is unrelated to the ulnar neuritis that ended his 2010 season on Sept. 4.

Nothing with the elbow, he said. Elbow feels perfect.

Despite previous arm and shoulder problems, Jenks has not been through this kind of injury before.

Nothing like this, no, he said. In the past, I think everyone in here, theyve thrown through similar things to what I thought it was initially. Unfortunately, I didnt say anything sooner and just continually went out there and made it worse.

Jenks won't throw for another three or four days. He is confident he will be ready to come off the DL when the 15 days is up.

The way it feels right now, just with this day-and-a-half of rest, its already feeling a little bit looser now, he said. I think after another few days, we should be right on the track we are right now.
