Game Story: Red Sox coast to blowout win

DETROIT Another day, another Red Sox slugfest.

The Red Sox picked up in Detroit where they left off in Cleveland, jumping out to an early lead on their way to a 14-1 pounding of the Tigers Thursday in the rain-shortened first game of their four-game set.

The Sox sent eight batters to the plate in the second inning, with five scoring. They opened the inning tying their season high in consecutive hits which they also did twice on Wednesday.

David Ortiz and Carl Crawford opened the inning with singles. Drew Suttons double scored Ortiz and Josh Reddicks single scored Crawford. After Jason Varitek struck out, Jacoby Ellsburys fifth home run of the season scored Sutton and Reddick.

Red Sox call up RHP Cuevas, send Marrero to Pawtucket

With the Red Sox bullpen taxed in recent days by pitching 18 1/3 innings the past four games, including a short outing Friday night by starter David Price, right-hander William Cuevas was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket and infielder Deven Marrero was sent down.

Cuevas, 25, made one relief appearance for Boston (allowing two runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings in his major league debut April 21) and had been starting at Pawtucket (4-3, 3.30 ERA in 12 starts). He pitched 5 1/3 innings on Sunday. He'll be available out of the bullpen tonight as the Red Sox continue their three-game series in Texas.

Marrero, 25, appeared in four games and went 1-for-7 in his latest stint in Boston.
