FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Jay Heaps knows the kind of threat Sounders’ forward Clint Dempsey poses better than most MLS coaches. After all, it wasn’t all that long ago that the two were actually teammates.
From 2004-2006, Heaps had a front row seat for the skills and abilities that would make Dempsey, who’ll face the Revolution for the first time on Sunday, one of the most formidable American soccer players of his generation. And the way the Revolution coach tells it, some of qualities that made his former teammate a star haven’t faded in the slightest.
“Fiery, competitive and relentless,” Heaps said in reference to Dempsey’s most definable traits. “I want to say this in right way: he plays with some cockiness, which I think has always helped him. And when he plays with confidence, there’s no one better.”
