FOXBORO -- In the days leading up to Sunday’s contest against Seattle Sounders, Jay Heaps knew that the best way to stop the top offense in MLS was simple: keep Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins from getting comfortable.
So when the New England Revolution coach brought his players into the film room last week, he told his players to be especially smart inside the central channel, where Seattle’s dynamic duo thrived. But translating that advice into action wouldn’t be easy. And yet, that’s exactly what the Revolution did on Sunday, as they held firm inside their own end, haunting Dempsey and Martins relentlessly en route to a stunning 5-0 victory.
“We knew that they like going central,” Heaps said after the game. “So we wanted to make sure that we had numbers around those two guys, and when they got the ball, we had to get pressure to it immediately.”
