FOXBORO – Football is Tom Brady’s focus but the Patriots quarterback has to clear some space on his mental hard drive for futbol.
With the World Cup being held in the home country of wife Gisele Bundchen, it would have been a topic of conversation to begin with. But Bundchen has been asked to present the trophy to the World Cup winner, as well.
“She’s really excited,” Brady said Wednesday at minicamp at Gillette Stadium. “It only comes along once every four years, the World Cup and the national team and she’s been a part of the buildup to it and a part of the closing ceremony too with the presentation of the trophy after the final game.”
Brady understands the grip the event holds on the planet because – unlike the Super Bowl – it’s more universally embraced.
“Everyone in the world plays it, it’s just in America we have a lot of sports and in a lot of countries it’s one sport,” he explained. “It’s pretty cool that it’s a worldwide event. You go to African countries, and I’ve been there, and it’s all soccer. Europe? All soccer.”
So he’s a convert?
“I watch it,” he acknowledged. “But I don’t understand anything about it. I just watch the ball.”
