Here's your wakeup call -- a combination of newsworthy and/or interesting tidbits -- for Monday, September 23:

BASEBALL

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

GOLF

HOCKEY

  • John Scott against Phil Kessel isn't exactly a fair fight, but the Sabres felt it was justified after one of Toronto's goons went after a smaller Buffalo player. But what we'll really remember about fight night at the Air Canada Centre were the two goalies, Ryan Miller and Jonathan Bernier, going at it. (AP)

  • The Leafs may be the big losers in all this, since David Clarkson will probably get a 10-game suspension for leaving the bench during the fights. (NBC's Pro Hockey Talk)

  • The Oilers' Sam Gagner suffers a broken jaw during a collision with the Canucks' Zack Cassian and will miss the start of the season. (AP)

  • Penguins goalie Tomas Vokoun is recuperating after having a blood clot removed from his pelvis. (AP)

  • Vokoun's health aside, the Penguins are doubly concerned because Marc-Andre Fleury hasn't exactly been tearing it up in the exhibition games . . . and this on the heels of a pretty rancid performance in last spring's playoffs. (Pro Hockey Talk)
