From rising NFL star to murder suspect, the fall of Aaron Hernandez is one of the most shocking stories of this or any other year.
As part of SportsNet Central's Year In Review, we look back at the Hernandez case.
The 24-year-old former Patriots tight end, who had just signed a $41 million contract, was let go by the team the day he was arrested and charged with the murder of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd of Dorchester, Mass., in June.
For more than a week before he was charged, Hernandez was linked to the murder of Lloyd, a semi-pro football player who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee. Lloyd was shot and killed at an industrial park about a mile from Hernandez's North Attleboro, Mass., home.
Prosecutors said Hernandez "orchestrated the crime from the beginning and took steps to conceal evidence." Hernandez is also being investigated, but hasn't been charged, in connection with a July 2012 double homicide in Boston.
Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to Lloyd's murder. His next court date is scheduled for February. A trial date has not yet been set.
