Defensive tackle Vince Wilfork has asked the Patriots to release him. Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy figures Wilfork must've seen a request to restructure his contract coming. Is that all that's behind Wilfork's request to be let go?
"I really don't understand his motivation," Shaughnessy said on Arbella Early Edition. "Only Tom Brady's been on Super Bowl team [on the current roster] besides him. Unless he's bothered by not being the highest-paid guy. The [Darrelle] Revis thing bothered him? I mean everybody knew [Wilfork's contract] was going to be restructured."
Wilfork has taken less money to stay in New England before. At 32, he apparently wasn't willing to do it again.
"I understand he does't wnat to hear loyalty," Shaughnessy said. "Coming off [Achilles] injury [that limited him to four games last season], playing the position he plays is not valued commensurate with his cap hit [of $11.6 million]."
