Report: Roberts has ‘significant wrist injury'

A promising Patriots rookie may have had his season abruptly cut short due to injury.

According to ESPN's Mike Reiss and Adam Caplan, cornerback Darryl Roberts has suffered a "significant wrist injury that could threaten his season."

Roberts was a seventh-round pick of the Patriots out of Marshall, and he started in the team's first preseason game at cornerback opposite Malcolm Butler. In the first quarter against the Packers, Roberts appeared to hurt his wrist while making a tackle on running back James Starks. He left the game, did not return, and he has not been seen by reporters at Patriots practices since then.

A talented athlete, the 6-foot, 182-pounder ran a 4.36-second 40-yard dash at his pro day earlier this year. He also posted a 6.66-second three-cone drill, a 39-inch vertical, an 11-foot-1 broad jump and an eye-opening 23 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.

Roberts was a core-four special-teamer for the Herd and was seeing repetitions in the kicking game for the Patriots during training camp.

If he is lost for the season, that's a hit to the Patriots secondary, which appears to be searching for a No. 2 corner behind Butler. Among those in contention for the spot are Tarell Brown, Logan Ryan, Bradley Fletcher and Robert McClain, who has seen a majority of his practice reps in the slot.

Patriots safety Devin McCourty has also seen time at corner over the last week, manning one of the team's outside spots early in Saturday's preseason game against the Saints.
