Report: Patriots worked out CB Cortland Finnegan

FOXBORO -- The Patriots are on the hunt for some depth at the cornerback position, and they continued their search on Wednesday.

According to NFL Network's Rand Getlin, the Patriots worked out corner Cortland Finnegan. The former Dolphins, Rams and Titans defensive back retired in March but apparently has not ruled out a return to the field.

Finnegan played eight years in the NFL and started 12 games for the Dolphins last season. A seventh-round pick in 2006, Finnegan was named a First-Team All Pro in 2008 as a member of the Titans.

The Patriots currently have four healthy corners on their roster after placing Tarell Brown on injured reserve last week with a foot injury. Malcolm Butler has been the team's clear-cut No. 1, while Logan Ryan has taken on the No. 2 role. Undrafted rookie Justin Coleman and Rashaan Melvin, who was signed in the days leading up to New England's Week 6 win in Indy, round out the depth chart.

In his career, Finnegan has been known for his hard-nosed (and sometimes agitating) style of play. He has experience on both the inside and the outside, which may make him a relatively attractive option in the defensive backfield.
