Report: Patriots work out RB Kendall Hunter

FOXBORO -- The Patriots never stop looking for ways to improve their team, and that search continued late this week.

According to Field Yates of ESPN, the team worked out free-agent running back Kendall Hunter in order to keep its emergency list of potential acquisitions fresh.

When running back Dion Lewis was placed on injured reserve following New England's win over Washington on Nov. 9, the team lost its biggest contributor from that position group. To this point, the Patriots have opted not to add another running back and the group includes LeGarrette Blount, Brandon Bolden and James White.

The Patriots have, however, taken a look at a few running backs in case they feel the need to add one in the future. Hunter joins a list that has also included Pierre Thomas, Robert Turbin and Montee Ball, according to Yates.

Hunter is considered a third-down back who has proven to be relatively quick when healthy. In 2013, he rushed 90 times for 401 yards (a 4.5 yards-per-carry average) and caught two passes for 13 yards.

Hunter suffered a torn ACL two days into training camp in 2014 and missed all of last season. He reached an injury settlement with the Niners before the start of this season and became a free agent.
