Rob Gronkowski avoided starting the season on the PUP list, but that doesn't mean he will be ready for the start of the season.
According to Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald, the Patriots are expected to sign tight end Matthew Mulligan.
Mulligan would provide insurance for the Patriots in case Gronkowski isn't ready for the season opener against the Buffalo Bills.
The Patriots currently have Michael Hoomanawanui and rookie Zach Sudfeld as tight end depth.
The 28-year-old has 144 yards on 14 receptions in four seasons for the Jets and Rams.
