FOXBORO -- The Patriots will be without tight end Rob Gronkowski for what could be the remainder of the season.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Gronkowski's back injury will require surgery on Friday to repair a herniated disc. He will be out indefinitely, per Florio.

MORE ON GRONK

Gronkowski came into the league with concerns about a back injury that almost ended his career before it began, faling to the Patriots in the second round despite his obvious physical talent. He has had back surgery in college and he had another 2013.

Gronkowski suffered a chest injury in Week 10 against the Seahawks,. He sat out of New England's Week 11 game, and he played seven snaps last weekend against the Jets before exiting with a back injury.

Gronkowski has missed both Patriots practices this week.
