Despite appearing to aggravate a groin injury he had been dealing with for much of the offseason late in the first half of Sunday's contest against the Bills, Danny Amendola put on a strong performance over the final two quarters, hauling in 7 passes for 64 yards including some key third-down conversions.
Unfortunately, that ailment has not gone away and Amendola's chances of suiting up against the Jets Thursday night are not looking too good.
The ex-Ram wide receiver was not at Patriots walkthrough practice on Tuesday, a bad enough sign in and of itself. But his absence there did not necessarily imply that Amendola was very unlikely to suit up two days from now.
This tweet from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network is significantly more disturbing.
Amendola battled through a groin injury, leaving and returning. He's almost certain to miss Thursday. Hurts with Vereen out, Sudfeld ailing— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 10, 2013
If Amendola is out against the Jets that leaves, Tom Brady without three of his top receiving targets, as Shane Vereen is out at least four weeks due to a broken bone in his wrist and Rob Gronkowski is still recovering from offseason back surgery.
This also does not help Amendola's injury-prone reputation, one that led some to question the jettisoning of Wes Welker from the squad.
Amendola declined comment to reporters Tuesday, and, according to Mike Giardi, was walking with a slight limp.
Matters may change in the next 48 hours, but for now, Amendola appears to be heading for a night in street clothes on Thursday.
