RB Trey Williams released as Patriots shuffle roster

FOXBORO - Trey Williams didn't even get a cup of coffee with the Patriots. The 22-year-old running back claimed on waivers last week barely even got to see the kitchen. The Patriots released Williams on Thursday. The Texas A&M product has now been on and off the rosters and/or practice squads of the Patriots, Cowboys and Redskins since the end of training camp.

The Patriots also signed gadget guy Demaris Johnson last week. He played last week against the Texans and figures to be with the team as depth at both third-down back and slot receiver.

The Patriots also re-signed cornerback Rashaan Melvin to their practice squad a day after releasing him. Melvin's got good length but needs more seasoning as his incendiary play against the Giants indicated. The team also released defensive back Chris Greenwood from their practice squad to clear room for Melvin.
