FOXBORO - After releasing RJ Mattes on Wednesday, the Patriots had an available roster spot to fill. They have done that by signing undrafted rookie receiver Jeremy Johnson out of Southern Methodist University.
Johnson, a 6-foot, 179-pound receiver, was an All-American Athletic Conference second-team performer as a senior last season, when he caught a team-high 112 passes for 1,112 yards and six touchdowns for the Mustangs.
According to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post, Johnson tried out for the Ravens at their rookie minicamp but was not kept on board.
Johnson joins a crowded receiving corps in New England that includes Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Brandon LaFell, Aaron Dobson, Josh Boyce, Kenbrell Thompkins, Matthew Slater, Jeremy Gallon, Reggie Dunn, Wilson Van Hooser and Reese Wiggins.
