The Patriots have signed first-year defensive back Daxton Swanson from Sam Houston State and rookie free-agent defensive lineman L.T. Tuipulotu from Utah and released rookie free-agent safety Jeremy Deering from Rutgers and first-year wide receiver Greg Orton from Purdue, the team announced in a press release.
Swanson, 23, originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Indianapolis Colts last spring, was cut and signed to the San Francisco 49ers practice squad before being cut May 12. Swanson was Sam Houston State's all-time leader in interceptions with 14.
Tuipulotu, 23, played12 games, with 11 starts, as a senior at Utah last season and finished with 42 tackles, 1.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.
Deering, 23, signed with the Patriots last week and Orton, 27, was signed to the practice squad Dec. 31, 2013. The moves put the Pats roster at 88, two below the 90-man limit.
