Patriots release White, sign two UDFAs

FOXBORO -- A trade with the Chicago Bears wasn't the only move the Patriots made to shake up the bottom of their 90-man roster on Monday.

The team announced that they released linebacker and special teamer Chris White as well as tight end Mason Brodine. To take their spots on the roster, New England added running back Tony Creecy and tight end Logan Stokes.

White, who has been with the Patriots since 2013 after being claimed off of waivers, began training camp on the physically unable to perform list and never passed his physical. Taken by the Bills in the sixth round of the 2013 draft, he was signed by the Lions and released before being claimed by New England. White played in 13 games in 2014 and tallied nine special teams tackles.

Brodine was signed by the Patriots last week in order to help a tight end group that has dwindled in terms of numbers since the start of camp. Rookie sixth-round pick AJ Derby landed on injured reserve and veteran free-agent acquisition Scott Chandler has missed time with an undisclosed injury.

Both new Patriots were signed as undrafted free agents.

Creecy is a product of North Carolina State who ran for 1,265 yards in four seasons for the Wolfpack. At 6-feet and 200 pounds, he also has shown some abilities as a receiver, reeling in 75 catches in his college career.

Stokes actually spent a week with the Patriots in June following the draft and re-signed on Monday. He spent the 2013 and 2014 seasons at LSU, mainly seeing the field as a blocking tight end. The 6-foot-5, 255-pounder made one reception in 13 games last year. It was a three-yard score in a 10-7 win over Ole Miss.
