The Patriots announced on Wednesday that they have released linebacker Tony Steward off of their 90-man roster. Steward, signed on April 22, spent less than three weeks with the team.

A sixth-round pick out of Clemson by the Bills in 2015, Steward played in seven games last season, primarily as a reserve linebacker and special-teamer. He finished his rookie year on injured reserve.

The Patriots linebacker group now includes a pair of roster locks in Dont'a Hightower and Jamie Collins as well as veterans Jonathan Freeny, Ramon Humber and Kevin Snyder. Rookies Kamu Grugier-Hill (sixth round), Elandon Roberts (seventh round) and CJ Johnson (undrafted) will also compete for time this spring and summer.
