Patriots release former Michigan QB Gardner

Put those Julian Edelman comparisons on hold.

The Patriots released undrafted free agent rookie wideout Devin Gardner on Monday, one of three cuts the Patriots made to start the week. The move to part ways with Gardner -- a college quarterback who was making the transition to receiver -- was announced simultaneously with the releases of corner Chimdi Chekwa and linebacker Cameron Gordon.

Like Edelman, Gardner was a college signal-caller who was hoping to make the leap to the NFL as a wideout. Gardner would have been a much different type of prospect than Edelman, though, since the Michigan product measures in at 6-foot-4 and 217 pounds.

With Gardner's departure, the Patriots have 10 players to make up their receiver depth chart. The group includes Julian Edelman, Brandon LaFell, Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson, Josh Boyce, Brian Tyms, Jonathan Krause, Brandon Gibson, Matthew Slater and undrafted free agent Chris Harper.

Of course, Gardner's departure also means that, once again, there is only one former Michigan quarterback on the roster.
