Did you know that the phrase “on the bubble” was coined in 1970, its first appearance being in a story related to the Indianapolis 500?

"On the 'bubble' is rookie Steve Krisiloff whose 162.448 m.p.h. was the slowest qualifying speed last weekend. With only six spots open, Krisiloff's machine would be ousted if seven cars qualified at a faster speed this week end." --The Lima News, May 1970.

So we have The Lima News to blame for the phrase that bubbles up this time of year in the NFL and then again throughout the college basketball season.

With cuts from 75 to 53 coming Saturday, here’s a position-by-position look at the players on the team. You can judge for yourself which players are on the proverbial bubble.

Bear in mind as well what Bill Belichick said last week before the Patriots game with the Lions.

"I think it's not a question of necessarily 'who's better than who,' (when making cuts) but kind of how it all fits together so we can take care of all of our needs on offense, defense and special teams,” Belichick explained. “(We also have to account for) some depth in those areas and try to balance out our roster so we're not overly thin in one area or have too much insurance in another area that costs us somewhere else.”
