Patriots injury report: Cannon, Sheard out vs. Jets

FOXBORO -- The Patriots will be without both Marcus Cannon and Jabaal Sheard on Sunday when the Jets visit Gillette Stadium.

Cannon (toe) and Sheard (ankle) were ruled out for the Week 7 game when the Patriots released their injury report on Friday.

Cannon left last week's game against the Colts after just 11 plays. In his absence starting right tackle Sebastian Vollmer shifted to left tackle while Cameron Fleming subbed in to play on the right side. With Cannon definitively out, the Patriots could use a similar alignment when their offense takes the field this weekend.

With Sheard out of action, the Patriots will likely be required to rely on defensive ends Chandler Jones and Rob Ninkovich to play the vast majority of snaps at that position. Sheard played in just 15 of 80 possible snaps against the Colts on Sunday, leaving Ninkovich and Jones to play in 69 and 74 snaps, respectively. The Patriots lost further potential depth at defensive end when reserve edge player Rufus Johnson was ruled out of the game to due illness.

Offensive lineman Shaq Mason, who returned to practice on Friday, is among those listed as questionable, as is special teams ace Matthew Slater, who injured his knee late in the Indy game. Linebacker Dont'a Hightower (ribs) is also questionable after sustaining the injury in the first quarter of a Week 5 win over Dallas. He was scratched from the Colts game due to his injury.
