Patriots add former Bucs CB Leonard Johnson

FOXBORO -- The Patriots have added another cornerback to their secondary in order to improve their depth at that position group.

Leonard Johnson was in the Patriots locker room on Wednesday and preparing to practice with the team for the first time as Bill Belichick's bunch prepares for the Houston Texans. Johnson reportedly worked out with the team recently and remained in the area before officially agreeing to a deal.

Johnson measures in at 5-foot-10, 202 pounds and is in his fourth year out of Iowa State. He played for three seasons in Tampa Bay, including two under Belichick pal Greg Schiano (2012, 2013).

New England released corner Rashaan Melvin earlier this week, opening a spot on the 53-man roster. Johnson now joins Malcolm Butler, Logan Ryan and Justin Coleman as the corners on the team's active roster.

The Patriots have also added linebacker Eric Martin to the practice squad. There was an open spot on the 10-man unit after the team released tight end Joseph Fauria.
