FOXBORO -- Now that EJ Manuel has been named the Bills' starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Patriots, Buffalo first-year coach Doug Marrone explained his decision to choose Manuel over undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel.

Quite simply, now that he's healthy, he's earned it.

"I think it's very easy to say that, based upon the preseason and practice, that EJ Manuel has earned this," said Marrone in a conference call on Wednesday.

"If EJ Manuel wasn't ready to go, Jeff Tuel would be playing quarterback, and that's how we're going about our business. I said, publicly, before, that we picked the time frame that we thought if he was able to come back, we'd be able to get him ready and then we'd make a decision. And then obviously through the rehabilitation process, that time period moved up.

"I don't think this shocks anyone, about EJ being our starting quarterback."
