Mankins (knee) targeting season opener

Earlier on Monday, our buddies at PFT (namely, the artist known as Michael David Smith) noted that conflicting timetables have been reported for Logan Mankins' return.

ESPN.com AFC East blogger James Walker reported earlier Monday that "chances appear slim" Mankins will be ready for the September 9 opener against Tennessee as Mankins continues to rehab from ACL surgery.

Walker was over at Patriots mini-camp last week where Mankins didn't participate but was frequently on the field running sprints as his rehab continues.

MDS notes that the Boston Herald wrote in Sunday's paper what was reported during the OTAs -- that Mankins was progressing.

What's the story?

I'm told that Mankins is expected to begin training camp on the PUP list (which was expected) and there is every reason to believe he will come off the PUP list before the end of training camp and be ready for the Patriots' opener against the Titans.

His progress was termed as "awesome."
