August All-Pro Zach Sudfeld is a New York Jet.
The rookie tight end released Thursday by the Patriots was claimed Friday by the Jets off the waiver wire. It’s a bit disappointing for the Patriots because Sudfeld – while overmatched since the regular season began – does have undeniable upside as a pass catching tight end in this league.
That he’ll have to mine that potential as a member of the Jets is a sizeable setback. Sudfeld had six catches for 69 yards in the preseason but it was in training camp practices they he really shined. He has NFL quality hands and athletic ability. He’s just too slight at this point to be on the field much and he seized up in a big way when the lights were on in the regular season (pick on Tom Brady pass intended for him in Buffalo; mishandled onsides kick last week).
The Patriots also released Marquice Cole on Friday. The team has an open roster spot headed into Sunday’s game at Cincinnati.
A good guess would point to the elevation of Marcus Forston from the practice squad for defensive line assistant. The team also worked out free agent defensive linemen Marcus Dixon and DaJohn Harris on Friday.
Harris went to USC and was with the Titans in 2012 after coming into the league undrafted. He was released in final cuts. Dixon, a defensive end for the Jets from 2010 through 2012, was in Kansas City’s camp over the summer but was released in final cuts as well.
