It was a 40-9 loss, but really it wasn't that close.

The Patriots loss to the Lions in third preseason game on Thursday night was a head-scratcher in many ways. While it may not mean anything, Mike Giardi of "SportsNet Central," who witnessed it, knows what it will mean to the Pats players this week.

Giardi says that the Patriots were sloppy and because of this, Bill Belichick will be able to bring some players back down to Earth.

"They were really sloppy and turned the ball over four times in the first 20 minutes," Giardi said. "This week in practice is going to be hell. They're going to get their butts handed to them in the film room and get their butts handed to them on the practice field.

Giardi was asked if any of the young players stood out?

"[Kenbrell] Thompkins [8 catches, 116 yards] was the most consistent of the young wide receivers," Giardi said. "He's earned Tom Brady's trust. I don't think any of the others did anything to distinguish themselves....A lot of young players will catch a beating in practice this week."
