Giardi: Friday a "bad, bad day" for Garoppolo

No one expected Jimmy Garoppolo to walk into training camp and win the starting quarterback job from Tom Brady. It will be several years before Garoppolo has a legitimate shot to win the No. 1 spot, that much was very clear after watching the rookie on Friday.

Mike Giardi and Patriots Insider Tom E. Curran break down Day 2 of Patriots Training Camp.

“Bad, bad day [for Garoppolo]," says Giardi. "Not a good look for him on the second day."

“He threw it to the wrong team on a number of occasions," says Curran, "including when he hit a linebacker (Chris White) in the hands on the goal line, with no one around him and it looked like he stared [White] down to complete the pass. Jimmy, throw it to the guys in the jerseys that are white.”

One player who has impressed early on is Kenbrell Thompkins, but that script sounds familiar to those who regularly follow the Patriots. Thompkins was a trendy fantasy football pick after he burst on the scene with a stellar training camp last year, but he disappeared in the regular season. Curran says Thompkins will have to prove he can carry over the results when the games matter.

"[People will say] 'yea, but he did the same thing in 2013.' He’ll have to back it up as he gets further [into the season]," says Curran.

There's still a long way to go before the season begins and it's important to remember just how young both of these players are, but right now Garoppolo and Thompkins are trending in very different directions.
