Felger: The rookies did 'squat'
The Patriots’ rookie receivers could not get it done in their first regular season game in the National Football League.
Kenbrell Thompkins, Josh Boyce, and Zach Sudfeld struggled catching passes from Tom Brady. Thompkins was targeted 14 times, only caching four passes. Brady targeted Boyce twice and Sudfeld once, each unable to have a reception. Brady's pass to Sudfeld actually turned into an interception.
Mike Felger, Troy Brown, and Mike Flynn felt the group of rookie receivers did not live up to expectations.
“I bought into the hype a little bit from what I heard from everyone watching the training camp practices and then some of those preseason games how far along these rookies were,” said Mike Felger. “The rookies did squat. The rookies weren’t here in this game. I think that shows you, don’t buy too much into the preseason.”
Former Patriots wide receiver Troy Brown believes it will take time for the rookie receivers to learn the complex New England offense.
“They have 14 rookies that came onto this team, a lot on offense, 23 practices is not going to get it,” Brown said. “They are not going to be on the same page with Tom Brady just yet. It is going to be a work in progress. It’s going to be some frustrated people and some frustrated fans out there until they get this thing together.”
