Ex-NFL coach Mike Sherman becomes Mass. high school coach

Mike Sherman has been head coach of the Green Bay Packers, the Texas A&M Aggies and now...the Nauset High Warriors.

That's right, from coaching Brett Favre (2000-2005) in the shadow of Vince Lombardi's legacy on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field, to A&M (2008-2011) and its 12th Man tradition to a 1,000-student high school on Cape Cod, the pride of the Atlantic Coast League.

Sherman, 60, a native of Norwood, Mass., and graduate of Central Connecticut State in New Britain, last coached the NFL as Dolphins assistant in 2013.

Why go back to high school?

“I guess I’d say, why not? I’ve been fortunate financially over the years, which is allowing me to do this,” Sherman told the Cape Cod Times. “Back in January I was looking for a place to have a football camp this summer and Nauset High School came up. Then I heard they were looking for a head football coach.

“I have always admired high school coaches who give their time to their players,” Sherman said. “They have a chance to impact young lives. That is exciting and I’m looking forward to having an effect on these kids’ lives.”
