So far it has been raining yellow penalty flags throughout the NFL preseason.
The league has made contact in the defensive backfield a point of emphasis for the referees.
Former NFL supervisor of officials Jim Daopoulos called into Sports Sunday to explain why the game is being called as it is during preseason.
"I watched the Patriots game the other night," said Daopoulos. "there was flag, after flag, after flag, but this is what they're told to do. I can tell you, once the regular season starts, this isn't going to happen."
"We're in the preseason right now and they have over twenty developmental officials and they're just trying to learn the game right now. They are basically telling them, 'get out there and throw [flags] and we'll tell you what's good.' It's a learning process right now. I know it's kind of tough for everyone to watch, we hate watching all these flags. It's just nature of what goes on in the preseason in the NFL."
