Curran: Which Patriots are winning camp battles?

Tom E. Curran tells Trenni Kusnierek the New England Patriots may have “more upside” with their current crop of third-down running backs than they have in recent years.

“Shane Vereen was an outstanding player in the system and he had a great Super Bowl, obviously,” Curran said. “But when you look overall at the things Dion Lewis and Travaris Cadet bring to the table, I think there’s more upside.”

Curran added: “This past week we got to see James White and then Dion Lewis both battle it out. I thought Lewis was outstanding. But Travaris Cadet, who was probably the best third-down back over the first couple weeks of practice, hasn’t played in either preseason game because he got himself hurt. But you’ve got some depth and some stuff you can look at if you’re Bill Belichick.”
