Jimmy Garoppolo, by most accounts, delivered a strong showing in the preseason.

But how close is he to forcing Tom Brady out of town?

Patriots Insider Tom E. Curran checks in on Quick Slants to talk about the two quarterbacks.

"From May through July, I told you that Jimmy Garoppolo was a wasted pick," says Curran. "I wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then, because Tom Brady almost certainly will be gone before his four years is up."

Brady's contract runs through 2017, but if Garoppolo continues to develop at his current pace, the Patriots will need to make a decision much sooner than that.

The Patriots very recently reminded fans that there's no room for sentiment when it comes to doing what's best for the long-term health of the franchise.

"Logan Mankins gave me a quick refresher that when the backup can nearly approximate what the starter is doing, the Patriots are going to pull that ripcord," says Curran.

The clock is ticking.
