Tom E. Curran takes a look at three players who are in trouble going into Friday's preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.
One of those players is Patrick Chung, who is in his second stint with the New England Patriots.
"I know you have to go heavy in the secondary these days," explained Curran. "But Patrick Chung has Duron Harmon to deal with. He's got Tavon Wilson, a second-round pick. He's got guys like Kyle Arrington suddenly taking snaps back there. I look at Patrick Chung and say, 'you're not that good in coverage, you can hit, you're pretty good in run support. But are you good enough to keep around?"
Has Josh Boyce done enough to open eyes and stay on the Patriots roster?
"He hasn't done enough in my estimation to say, 'wow, that's a guy you can't part with,'" explained Curran. "You look at guys like Tyms, made a much better case in a much more limited time than Josh Boyce has in two camps… Josh Boyce is not a guy who stands out."
As he has throughout training camp and preseason, Ryan Mallett's play will be under a microscope.
"When you look at this team, they are in a position where they're going to need multiple players at multiple positions," said Curran. "A third quarterback in the NFL is a luxury item, and Jimmy Garoppolo has shown that he can be a capable backup."
