Training camp wasn't going all that well for Jimmy Garopollo.
In Thursday night's preseason game against the Washington Redskins, things turned around quickly for the rookie quarterback.
Albert Breer of the NFL Network joined Sports Sunday to discuss Garoppolo's performance.
"He looked natural," said Breer. "That's what we don't see from Ryan Mallet. Ryan Mallett looks like he's lumbering, looks like he struggles to move up in the pocket. Sometimes he's a sitting duck, other times he's got happy feet.
"What do you see with Jimmy Garopollo? Everything looks like it's coming to him innately. That's such a big part of playing the quarterback position. He doesn't look uncomfortable back there at all… There's some things you can't teach out there, and you can see why some teams had a first round grade on him."
Could Garopollo win the backup quarterback job?
"I think the door is wide open for him to be the primary backup," said Breer. "They've shown they're willing to go with a rookie behind Brady before, and I think they would this time too."
