Additional details about Mayo's contract restructure

A few more details on the restructure Jerod Mayo agreed to last week were provided Wednesday morning by ESPN’s Field Yates.

We reported last week that the deal included a $4.5 million salary for 2015.

It’s actually broken up as $1.5 in salary and $3M in signing bonus which allows the Patriots to spread the bonus money over the remaining three years of the deal and whittle down the cap hit.

The 2015 cap hit is reportedly $6.1M.

The Patriots will have until the first day of the 2016 league year next March to decide whether to pick up the option on Mayo’s 2016 deal. If they do, they’ll owe him a $4M roster bonus so the two sides could well be back to the table next March depending on how well things go as Mayo comes back from a season-ending patellar injury.
