3 and out: Patriots pass-catchers

Patriots Insider Tom E. Curran and Mike Giardi go three and out on certain additions and subtractions made to the Patriots receiving core.

They start by discussing third-year receiver Aaron Dobson, who has struggled with injuries issues since his rookie year.

"What we have with Dobson is a guy who has past his period as flavor of the week, and everyone wants to move onto the next guy," Patriots Insider Tom E Curran said. "He has not, to me, specially shown that he can't play in this league. He's got great strength. He's got great speed. He really can elevate and make spectacular plays. But as [Josh] McDaniels said, you have to do that consistently."

Most interesting, perhaps, are the Patriots additions to a position that was already strong in tight end. The Pats signed both Scott Chandler and Fred Davis this offseason.

"You don't really understand how big Chandler is until you see him up close and then you see him next to [Rob] Gronkowski," Curran said. "I'm not saying he dwarfs Gronk, but he's much more lean and tall ... If you look at how small teams have gotten at the linebacker level, so that they can cover better, you now have a 6-7 tight end in Gronk and a 6-8 tight end in Chandler -- you have a good opportunity to exploit some of the mid-level and down-the-middle areas."

Davis is coming off a suspension for a drug-related violation. For a guy that hasn't played football in a year, he has looked sharp.

"He's a skill guy, and you've already hear teammates say, 'He looks good,' " Patriots reporter Mike Giardi said.
