Mike Giardi and Tom E. Curran examine the Patriots at the half-way mark of the preseason.
* Danny Amendola made his presence felt in his home opener on Friday against the Bucs. The slot receiver pulled in six catches for 71 yards and a touchdown.
* Zach Sudfeld went undrafted but you'd never know that by watching him this preseason.
"He just keeps showing up," says Mike Giardi.
Sudfeld showed off his hands and his concentration on a deflected pass in the endzone against the Bucs.
* Last year, Bill Belichick utilized Aaron Hernandez in a number of positions. Hernandez gave defenses fits by taking carries out of the backfield, and lining up as both a tight end and receiver.
This season, it's Shane Vereen who appears to be filling that role. Vereen can line up in the backfield and as a receiver as well, and has already made a number of big plays through the first two games. If he can sustain those results, Vereen could be a very capable replacement for Hernandez's production.
