Gerry Fraley: 'I think Hamilton would have trouble in Boston'

Gerry Fraley from the Dallas Morning News joined Jessica Moran on The Baseball Show to talk about the Red Sox' newest addition to the team, Mike Napoli, and also touch upon the Josh Hamilton free agent situation.

So what's the story on Napoli? Well, Fraley can't say for sure.

"He had a tremendous second half of 2011, might have been the best player in the league at least the best offensive player in the league. He was not good last year, struck out one-hundred-and-fifty-something times, still got his walks. You gotta wonder, "Who is he?" I don't know. He had a bad 2010 with the Angels, a good 2011 second half, a bad 2012. I really don't know who is he."

What about his demeanor? That's obviously important to Bostonians, notes Moran.

"He's a quiet guy, he's one of the toughest guys I've ever seen," Fraley said. "Game 6 of the World Series in 2011, he had a high ankle sprain on his left ankle; he couldn't walk, and he played the next day. His pain-tolerance level is off the charts ... he's a very, very mentally, physically tough guy."

Sounds like a guy Sox fans can get used to. Can the same be said for Josh Hamilton? Hamilton's past issues are well documented, but are they still a factor in his being a free agent still?

"There's a lot of hesitation about Josh," Fraley said. "He is a recovering addict, and he has a body that is breaking down to some extent, and I think there's a lot of teams really weary of Josh right now."
