Quarles learning special teams to start

FOXBORO -- Cyhl Quarles was signed to the Patriots practice squad on Wednesday. On Thursday he said he was still feeling his way around Gillette Stadium as he focused on his duties as a scout team special teamer.

Quarles, whose first name is pronounced "Kyle," worked out for the Patriots on Sept. 4.

"I talked to the Patriots personnel and they said they'd give me a phone call back," Quarles said. "And I was like 'Ah man I might not get the phone call.' I went home, said some prayers, and they gave me a phone call back actually a week later. It's definitely a blessing to be here."

Quarles said he'll be focusing on roles for all four major special teams units -- kickoff, kickoff return, punt and punt return.

Quarles isn't very familiar with the New England area, but he became friends with Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones as they worked out at the Athletes' Performance Institute in Florida before the NFL Combine, and he's hoping Jones will show him around.

"Kind of hectic," said Quarles, who was released by the Ravens at the end of last month. "Came here from Baltimore. New experience, different state obviously. But Massachusetts and the New England area, everyone's Patriots fans so this is a great place to be."
