Playful Jones shrugs off labels

FOXBORO -- The Patriots selected Syracuse defensive end Chandler Jones with the 21st overall pick on Thursday night. That's four picks ahead of Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower, who the Patriots selected with the 25th overall pick.

Jones showed up to Gillette Stadium on Friday along with Hightower. And a difference in personality wasn't the only thing that stuck out.

"I was in my hoodie and my jeans, and they're like, 'You've got to come here and you've got to wear a suit tomorrow,'" said Jones. "I was like, 'Oh.' I was at my brother Jon's house, and I was like, 'Do you have any shirts that fit me?'"

His brother, UFC Light Heavyweight Champion "Bones" Jones, gave his brother Chandler shoes, dress pants, some jewelry, and a purple dress shirt that was too small.

With his short, rolled up sleeves and a smile from ear-to-ear, the playful, 6-foot-5 Jones was asked to describe his game. And unlike Hightower's description of himself, Jones said he wouldn't put a label on himself.

"I'm not going to sit here and say I flip the switch off and on," he said. "The way I play, I'm relaxed. That's how I play better, if you guys watch film.

"I'm not going to sit here and call myself a beast or I'm untamed or all of that. I don't get into that at all. I'm the same person all the time. And I know when it's time to play and when it's time to sit here and talk to the media."

When it is time to play, Jones -- who called himself a sponge for learning the game -- said his preparation and defensive style is built upon film-watching.

"I wouldn't describe my game as an individual," said Jones. "I wouldn't call myself a pass rusher or a run stopper. When I watch film, basically, I just love to look at all the greats. And I take little things from those guys, from each individual, and try to add it to my game.

"In high school, I really didn't watch film, I didn't watch film at all," added Jones. "Making the transition from high school to college, I was excited to watch more film. Making the transition from college to the professional level, just watching football in general.

"If I'm watching football, and I see X and Y team, and see a guy go around the corner and make this kind of play, I'm like, 'Oh, rewind that, that's nice, let me try to add that to my game.'"
