The Patriots announced today that they have signed rookie safety Cyhl Quarles to the practice squad. In a corresponding move, tight end Alex Silvestro has been released from the practice squad.

Quarles was signed as a rookie free agent by the Ravens and was released on Aug. 31. In his career at Wake Forest he had 239 tackles, two picks and two forced fumbles.

Silvestro made headlines last year when he was moved to the active roster the day before Super Bowl XLVI. (Tiquan Underwood was cut in order to make room.) Back then he was a defensive end. This season Silvestro was moved to tight end. Though he wasn't the most sure-handed player at the position, he worked to make the switch and was rewarded with a touchdown catch in New England's preseason game against the Eagles.
