Patriots sign punt returner Logan to practice squad

The Patriots announced on Wednesday that they have signed rookie receiver Tony Logan to their practice squad.

In actuality, Logan is more of a returner than a receiver -- he was primarily a punt returner in his three seasons at the University of Maryland. In 11 games as a senior he returned 16 punts for 96 yards and 15 kicks for 316 yards. He was the best punt returner in the ACC and third in the country with a 18.1 yards per punt return average. He started three games as a wideout.

A spot on the Patriots practice squad became available when the team released offensive lineman Tommy Draheim on Tuesday.

Logan posted a photo on instagram earlier today that indicated he would wear No. 13 for the Patriots. He spent time with the Rams during rookie camp. The 23-year-old also did a stint on the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos practice roster earlier this year but did not appear in any games.

The Patriots used Wes Welker as its punt returner on Monday night against the Texans after losing their top return man, Julian Edelman, to season-ending injured reserve because of a foot injury he suffered against the Dolphins in Week 13.
