The Patriots announced that they released linebacker Bobby Carpenter Tuesday.

Carpenter originally signed this offseason as a free agent and was released at the end of training camp. He re-signed with New England on Oct. 3 and played in four games primarily as a special teamer, recording two tackles.

The 29-year-old was taken by Dallas with the 18th overall pick out of Ohio State in 2006. He played for the Cowboys, Dolphins and Lions before arriving in New England in the spring.
