Patriots attend supplemental draft prospect's pro day

The Patriots already have a glut of wideouts on their roster, but according to a report, they were looking at another one on Tuesday.

According to Adam Caplan of Sirius XM Radio, New England was one of 21 teams present at supplemental draft prospect Josh Gordon's pro day.

Gordon ran a 4.52 40-yard dash and measured in at 6-foot-3 and 224 pounds, Caplan reported. Gordon also had a 36-inch vertical leap with a 10-foot, 1-inch broad jump, and he did 13 reps on the 225-pound bench press test.

While Gordon didn't show elite wide-receiver speed, his size more than makes up for it. One scout told ESPN that Gordon is a rare talent as far as supplemental drafts go.

The former Baylor receiver spent last season out of football after he was dismissed by Baylor last August. He then transferred to Utah but left for the suuplemental draft, which will take place on Thursday.

The supplemental draft is for players who missed the early-entry petition deadline or were not eligible for Aprils NFL draft.

The way it works is teams submit bids for eligible players, noting which round they would be willing to take a particular player. If a team wins their bid, it must forfeit a pick from the same round in the following years draft. (So if a team is willing to take Gordon as high as the second round -- as some are projecting could happen -- that team would lose its second-round pick in 2013.)

Why would the Patriots be in attendance for Gordon's workout? Well, we know they like to do their due diligence on players whenever possible. (They took a look at Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor before last year's supplemental draft.) But the Patriots seem pretty set at the wide receiver position. They currently have 11 on their roster and they'll likely have to cut a well-known pass-catcher or two during training camp. There's also this: Bill Belichick has never taken a player in the supplemental draft since he's become a head coach.
