Matt Patricia - fondly referred to by members of the Patriots defense as "Matty P - has been officially named the Patriots defensive coordinator.

Patricia has been the de facto head of the defense since 2010 replacing Dean Pees in responsibilities but not job title.

Patricia held the title of linebackers coach from 2006 through 2010 and was made the safeties coach prior to the 2011 season.

Josh Boyer, who's been in charge of the corners, now becomes the safeties coach. Brian Flores is now the cornerbacks coach.

Pepper Johnson moves from the defensive line to linebackers and Patrick Graham takes over the defensive line.

George Godsey is replacing the departed Brian Ferentz as tight ends coach.

The least prominent coaching move was made with a man who has a most prominent last name. Steve Belichick has been named a coaching assistant. The younger Belichick played four years of lacrosse at Rutgers and was a walk-on for the football team there as a long-snapper in 2011.
