FOXBORO -- Bill Belichick met the media Monday afternoon for a debriefing about New England's 20-18 loss to Arizona the previous night.
Key points: There's no update on the status of Aaron Hernandez, and if Wes Welker is losing playing time for any reason other than changing personnel packages, Belichick isn't talking about it.
Here's the rest of what the Patriots coach had to say.
"I think after going through the film this morning -- last night and this morning -- there's really not a whole lot new from yesterday. Basically, we just didn't do enough across the board as a team in any area consistently enough to win. We all just need to do a better job. We'll go back and obviously look at the mistakes, improve on the things that we are doing. There's plenty of room for improvement all the way around. I'm sure every player and every coach that was involved in the game can look back and see some things that we can all do a little differently.
"It just wasn't a good enough day for us yesterday. It was disappointing, but we'll turn the page and move on."
Was the 9-yard loss from Danny Woodhead designed as a pass play or a run? It was difficult to tell.
BB: "It was a play that obviously didn't go the way we wanted it to go. We just didn't do a good job on it. Need to coach it better, need to execute it better. Just wasn't a good play."
Several players said after the game that the week's practice was not good -- guys weren't doing their jobs. Is that how you felt?
BB: "You'll have to ask them that. Practice is practice; practice never goes perfectly -- that's what practice is for. You work on new things, you work on the things that the team that you're playing is doing. You correct those. Sometimes you get a chance to run those plays again in practice, but usually you really don't. We just don't have that many plays. By the time you get all the situation plays -- third down, red area, goal line, short yardage, all the special team things, second-and-long, second-and-short, all that -- repeat everything three or four times. There's corrections on every play. That's what we practice for."
Wes Welker said in a radio interview that missing time because of a death in the family set him back on the field. Do you see that as the case?
BB: "You'd have to ask him about that. I don't know the terminology he'd be referring to. Wes has a lot of experience around here. He's one of our smartest and obviously most experienced players. I don't really see him being behind."
How will Aaron Hernandez's ankle injury affect the game plan for Baltimore?
BB: "I don't know. We'll have to take a look at that. We'll have to take a look at Baltimore and put together a game plan. Do what we feel like is best to play the Ravens this week -- whatever that is -- though we haven't really started that process yet. We'll do the best we can and take advantage of whatever options we can. Obviously they're a good football team. We'll put together what we think will work."
Did Hernandez break any bones Sunday night?
BB: "Yeah, I don't really have any update on his status yet. I think they're still looking at it."
Patrick Peterson said after the game that Arizona's reputation as a good kick-blocking team scared Stephen Gostkowski. What's your reaction to that?
BB: "My reaction? They are a good kick-blocking team. But we kicked four field goals before that."
On the blocked Zoltan Mesko punt, did you feel it was simply about Nate Ebner missing his blocking assignment?
BB: "No, it was a combination of things. We just didn't do a good enough job on the play. We just need to do a better job all the way around -- our technique, our execution. There are several things on that play that could have been, that need to be better.
"There were several things that we need to do better on that particular play and there were other plays in the punting game that I'd say the same thing on. Things that we need to do better, things that obviously Nate could have done better, but there were other people involved too that could've. But we'll coach that, point it out, and we'll get better.
Back to Welker... is Julian Edelman seeing snaps ahead of Welker just about you feeling Edelman is a better option in that particular play?
BB: "We have different combinations of personnel groups out there in every game. Pretty much every week, that's pretty much he way we run our offense, and we have for quite a while. The players that we have out there are the ones that we feel are best for that particular play, situation, however you want to look at it. Thats the way we set up the plays of the offense and when they're called, and we put that group out there. Whatever is out there is what we think is best for our team for that time, for that play, for that situation."
