Hernandez on Gronk extension: ‘I'm happy for him'

FOXBORO -- Aaron Hernandez has said time and time again that he and fellow tight end Rob Gronkowski aren't competitive with each other. They're "more like brothers," he's explained.

Not even the money matters.

Last week, Gronkowski inked a six-year, 54 million contract extension. Hernandez, however, is still operating on his four-year rookie deal that netted 2.378 million. Where free agency will hit him in 2014, Gronkowski can relax knowing he's set for another five years.

Cause for envy? Not with these two.

"I don't know who could be mad about that," Hernandez grinned. "I'm happy for him. He deserves it."

Gronkowski had a record-setting 90 receptions for 1,327 yards and 17 touches last season. His unique skill set was complemented nicely by Hernandez, who racked up 910 yards and seven touchdowns on 79 catches of his own.

It's an interesting dichotomy. Together, they're a remarkable tight end tandem. But at the same time, Gronkowski's numbers pale those of his counterpart. Could Hernandez command the money of a number one tight end? Yes. But not on this team.

He was asked if he thinks he deserves a big pay day.

"Yeah, but I'll leave that up to my agents. And that's that."

Wouldn't it be nice to get it done early, though?

"Whatever works," Hernandez replied. "As long as I'm on that field playing, I'm happy."

Happy indeed; he was back for mini-camp after missing last Thursday's OTAs. Gronkowski is still working, rehabbing indoors and running alone, to get back to the team after a February ankle surgery.

Hernandez feels his "brother's" absence but isn't worried. Sounds about right.

"I think we'll be fine. Obviously, Gronkowski's going to come back strong. He's a hard worker and he's obviously freakish with his ability. We're missing him out there but obviously he'll be ready when we get back."
