Belichick on Welker comment: ‘Ask him'

The wink and smile that punctuated Wes Welker's Sunday evening jab at Bill Belichick may not have carried the day.

I asked Belichick Monday about Welker saying "it's nice to stick it in Bill's face every once in a while" after Welker's 13-catch performance, Belichick said he "really didn't see" the comment in question.

During the awkward pause that followed, I wondered if Belichick really didn't see or hear what was said. When I started to recount the comment, though, Belichick put the brakes on the discussion, saying, "You should ask him about it then. What he meant by it, I don't know."

For his part, I'm told Welker feels badly about the reaction to what he intended to be a joke. He was trying to commiserate with former Patriots Ty Law and Troy Brown who were both in the Comcast SportsNet studio with Mike Felger when the question was posed on Postgame Live.
